Who knew! I just downloaded the newest build of Flash Player 9 for Linux and I am very surprised. I really thought it was going to suck. The playback is fast and smooth. There’s some demos available on Flashguru.com.
The biggest update for flash is the support of h264 video. It plays quicktime h264 and Mpeg4 h264 files natively. They’ve also added (and for good reason) simple acceleration. The demos on the page are true 720p HD clips. Full screen mode looks amazing.
This is where things get interesting. The open Flash implementation called Gnash, in my opinion should easily decode the h264 stream with little work. All the source to decoding h264 and AAC are already part of the Mplayer project. It’s an open standard. Lets hope.
Anyways, I await the arrival of our first HD youtube.
